Being a Black Mother Living with HIV Is a “Whole Story”: Implications for Intersectionality Approach

While African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) mothers living with HIV in Canada are required to follow public health guidelines by exclusively formula feeding their infants, they also face cultural expectations from peers family members breastfeed. They multiple challenges because of race, ethnicity, gender, class, geographical location, among other factors. Previously published studies on this subject did not analyze how the intersectionality these factors impacts mothers’ infant experiences. In article, we discuss practices Ottawa (Canada). We followed a qualitative methods research design that utilized community-based participatory approach. used framework as lens complex mesh determinants influencing motherhood experiences ACB women HIV. Being Black/ACB mother while is “whole story” permeated cutting-across issues such socio-political, contexts. These interwoven often difficult unravel. Multiple layers structural women’s vulnerability described. Intersectionality important for an in-depth understanding societal power dynamics impact inequities.
